Ground Covers

	USING GROUND COVERS Ground cover can be used as a facer for a shrub border, at the base of a flowering tree or as an edging along a garden path. Underplanted with spring bulbs and perennials, it can be further enhanced. With it, one can solve problems with soil or slope retention; or it can serve as an alternative where shade, tree roots or excessive maintenance prohibits lawn. Don't limit yourself, use the different perennials, grasses and shrubs listed below. The Annabelle Hydrangea used as a ground cover in a shade garden maintains a woodland character and delicately blends with the hosta, fern and wildflowers.

	Availability of sizes may vary with season and branch location and larger sizes may be available upon request. Sizes range from individual 3-4" pots and flats of 24 (3"pots). The shrubs and perennials used as ground covers are available in larger sizes.
	AEGOPODIUM Aegopodium podagraria 'Variegatum' Green foliage edged with creamy white; in summer, white flower clusters appear just above the foliage. To expedite clean-up, it can be mowed once or twice a year. Height 6-14", Spread 9-14" AJUGA, CARPET BUGLE Ajuga reptans 'Cultivars vary' This ground cover has lustrous, deep bronze-purple foliage with blue, spike-like flower clusters in late spring. Height 4-6", Spread 9-12"
Stella de' Oro Daylily	DAYLILY Hemerocallis 'Cultivars vary' Daylilies create a dense mass of bright green, grass-like foliage. Flower colors range from yellow, red, pink, maroon, brown, orange to salmon. Some varieties will bloom from May through October but most bloom in mid-summer. Height 12-36", Spread 12-36" ENGLISH IVY Hedera helix English Ivy can be used as a low, evergreen ground cover or climbing vine. It has a rich, dark green, foliage. Height 6-8", Spread 9-14"
Hosta used as a ground cover	HOSTA Hosta 'Cultivars vary' A beautiful ground cover for shady areas. One can plant Hosta in massings or drifts within a wooded area, perennial border or as a facer for shrubs. Height 3-36", Spread 3-48"
Lilyturf	LILYTURF Liriope spicata A semi-evergreen ground cover, grass-like in texture, with light lilac flowers in July and August. Its dark green summer foliage turns tan in winter and can be cut back in early spring before new growth starts. Height 8-12", Spread 9-14"
Pachysandra	PACHYSANDRA Pachysandra terminalis An evergreen ground cover with bright green foliage accompanied by white flowers in early spring. Height 6-8", Spread 9-12" PURPLELEAF WINTERCREEPER Euonymus fortunei 'Coloratus' A rugged, dependable ground cover with semi-evergreen foliage which turns a rich purple in the fall. Height 4-6", Spread 12-16"
Vinca, Periwinkle	VINCE, PERIWINKLE Vinca minor This old favorite is low growing, spreading and evergreen with dark green foliage. Lilac-blue flowers add interest from spring to early summer. Height 4-6", Spread 9-14"
