Plant Descriptions All
the plants in our catalog are hardy throughout Illinois unless
noted. Plants, just like people, are living organisms and their
physical characteristics can vary greatly. So, the heights and
spreads indicated are merely averages under normal growing conditions.
Full Sun - 8 or more hours
of direct or very, lightly filtered sunlight.
Partial Shade - 4-8 hours of
direct or filtered sunlight, shaded by other plants or located
on the North side of the building.
Full Shade
- Little direct sunlight, under a heavy canopy of trees or
located in the shadow of a tall building.
Shade and Ornamental Tree Sizes
Trees with a single stem are measured
and sold by caliper, which is the diameter of the trunk measured
6" from the ground. Multi-stem trees, those with two
or more stems, are measured either by height or caliper of
the largest stem, 6" from the ground. Availability of
sizes may vary with season and branch location and larger
sizes may be available upon request. Sizes include: #10 Container,
#15 Container, 1.50"/8-10', 1.75"/10-12', 2.00"/12-14',
2.50"/13-15', 3.00"/14-16', 3.50"/15-16'

NORWAY MAPLE
Acer platanoides 'Cultivars noted below'
Tolerant of most conditions, there are
many varieties that differ in habit and foliage color. Generally,
the Norway Maple has a round, symmetrical crown, medium growth
rate and low maintenance requirements. With the exception
of Crimson King Norway Maple, they have a dark green, glossy
foliage that turns a rich yellow in fall. Height 40-50', Spread

Red Maple |

RED MAPLE
The Red Maple distinguishes
itself by always having red present: red buds in winter, reddish
flowers in spring, red leaf stalks in summer and a brilliant
orange red to red fall color. Healthy growth and a dense oval
to rounded habit make it an excellent shade tree. They are probably
best suited for the moist, hospitable conditions of a lawn,
as they are intolerant of polluted, urban conditions.  |

SUGAR MAPLE

In fall, its glossy, dark green leaves
turn varied shades of clear yellow, brilliant orange, scarlet
and a rich crimson. One of the finest of the large shade trees,
oval to rounded in form. Our varieties of Sugar Maple have
medium to fast growth rates, making them useful for streets,

Commemoration Sugar Maple Heavy
green foliage that is resistant to leaf tatter. Predominately
yellow to orange in the fall, it tends to color a week or

BIRCH
Birches
make handsome specimen trees and are useful for naturalizing.
A broadly pyramidal habit and an airy structure provides light
shade in the summer and an outstanding winter silhouette, particularly
against a backdrop of evergreens. Our varieties all show superior
resistance to the bronze birch borer. Birch produce pendulous
seed clusters which add to the interesting texture of the trees.

Linden tend to have a more pyramidal form
in youth becoming rounded at maturity. The fast growth rate,
sweetly fragrant flowers, heart-shaped leaves and stately
form make them popular as both shade and ornamental trees.

a rich green turning yellow in fall.

form in their youth and become more spreading or rounded with
maturity. They are beautiful planted as a lawn specimen or
in groups. With maturity, Oaks bear acorns that are of considerable
value to wildlife. Since their foliage often persists into
the winter months, they are useful for screening or as a complement
